"Shingle Estate on the Hudson," Mackin Architects + Campion Platt

I remember picking up the July 2010 issue of Architectural Digest. "Cher's New Hollywood Home" was supposed to be the big story. I began flipping through the glossy pages until this house caught my eye. Needless to say, my jaw dropped.
I don't mean to insult Cher, but this collaboration by Mackin Architects and Campion Platt stole the show. "The residence is in the Shingle Style, with a touch of Colonial Revival symmetry and porch detailing." It overlooks one-hundred acres of land in the scenic Hudson Valley. And every aspect of this home is truly exceptional.

The residence features "eleven foot ceilings, a wealth of period detail and a classic, deep wraparound porch." It was inspired by another structure on the property, built in 1908, which now functions as the guest house.
Notice how beautifully the floor-to-ceiling windows maximize the glorious views and let in an abundance of light.

Another view of the fabulous outdoor living and entertaining areas, which include this charming screen porch -- a perfect spot to enjoy the breathtaking view of the countryside.

The home features a beautiful swimming pool and stone terrace.

The entrance hall sets the tone of the home; it manages to create a sense of place and a feeling of warmth, which could have easily been lost on a house of this size. The space features beautiful period details, a cozy fireplace, an unobstructed view of the splendid scenery, and simply perfect interior design by Campion Platt.

Campion Platt used "muted colors, textured finishes, custom carpets and embroidered fabrics...layered over soft and inviting...upholstery, referential shapes and casual family friendly furniture arrangements."
DINING ROOM. | Photo: Scott Frances | CAMPIONPLATT.COM
Notice how the dining room's clean and classic interior design (by the talented Campion Platt) allows the architectural detail (and, of course, the spectacular setting) to shine.
LIBRARY. | Photo: Scott Frances | MACKINARCHITECTS.COM
Mr. Mackin and Mr. Platt both approached the library in such an inventive manner. The ceiling is unexpected (and brilliant), and the furnishings are current and classic at the same time.

Campion Platt creates a sense of continuity by incorporating the muted earth tones used in the great room into the design of the fabulous kitchen, which adjoins the space.
