"On the Water in Southport," Peter Zimmerman Architects + Hobbs, Inc.
2010 HOBI AWARD-WINNING HOME BY PETER ZIMMERMAN ARCHITECTS + HOBBS, INC. | PHOTO: HOBBS, INC PHOTOSTREAM.
Peter Zimmerman Architects and fine homebuilder Hobbs, Inc. were presented with a HOBI Award in 2010 (Best Custom Home in the 5,000 to 6,000 square foot category) for this exceptional new residence on the waterfront in the charming town of Southport, Connecticut. The period design and meticulous craftsmanship pay homage to New England's rich architectural tradition.
REAR TERRACE OF PERIOD-INSPIRED HOME BY PETER ZIMMERMAN ARCHITECTS + HOBBS, INC. | PHOTO: HOBBS, INC PHOTOSTREAM.
I've admired Mr. Zimmerman's work from the first time I stumbled upon one of his projects in the pages of New Old House Magazine (one of my favorite publications). Notice how this home feels as if it has a sense of history, in spite of it being brand new.
SWIMMING POOL + TERRACE OF NEW WATERFRONT HOME IN SOUTHPORT, CONNECTICUT | PHOTO: HOBBS, INC.
The swimming pool is located on the side of the residence. This outdoor living/entertaining area overlooks the water, yet it's placed in such a way that it doesn't compete with the marvelous vista.

Small touches, such as these beautiful hanging lanterns on the covered porch, and the white picket fence, enhance the exterior of the home.

From this angle, you can see how Mr. Zimmerman carefully sited the house and designed every detail to take advantage of the magnificent setting.
LIVING AREA | GREAT ROOM WITH CLASSIC, CLEAN INTERIOR DESIGN | PHOTO: HOBBS, INC PHOTOSTREAM
The fabulous windows of the great room let in an abundance of natural light, as well as the stunning harbor view, which almost seems like a mural in this room. Notice the comfortable, yet elegant interior design; while it draws upon tradition, the clean lines of the decor and neutral palette make the home feel up-to-date and livable.
SIMPLE MODERN ART HANGS ABOVE THE FIREPLACE IN THE GREAT ROOM | PHOTO: HOBBS, INC PHOTOSTREAM
The historically-inspired color scheme contrasts beautifully against classic, yet less traditional elements, like the stacked crown moldings, and the modern shapes of the artwork, lighting fixtures and accent table.

Another juxtaposition of old and new in the dining room, where an antique chandelier hangs above the more current table and chairs.
ANTIQUES ADD PERIOD-CHARM TO THE STATE-OF-THE-ART WHITE KITCHEN | PHOTO: HOBBS, INC PHOTOSTREAM
The spacious kitchen features white cabinetry and state-of-the-art appliances, but still maintains a sense of warmth and historical charm, thanks to a few carefully placed antiques (like the simple drop-leaf table beside the island), and architectural details like the wooden beams across the ceiling.
WINDOWS PROVIDE TRANSPARENCY BETWEEN THE KITCHEN AND SUN ROOM | PHOTO: HOBBS, INC PHOTOSTREAM
Notice how Mr. Zimmerman uses windows between the kitchen and sun room to brilliantly connect the spaces in a bright and airy manner.

Mr. Zimmerman and his talented team created the perfect balance of understated elegance and drama in this upstairs hall.

The luxurious master bath with its splendid grey-and-white mosaic tiles, pedestal tub and built-in cabinetry is absolutely spectacular.

Another view of the master bath. The clever two-sided vanity is painted a dark grey, and topped with glamorous carrara marble.
MASTER BEDROOM SUITE WITH FLOOR-TO-CEILING WINDOWS | PHOTO: HOBBS, INC PHOTOSTREAM
The master bedroom suite features floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the harbor. The interior designer wisely chose to keep the decor simple, which really allows the scenery to shine.
