"House in New Canaan," Boxwood Home + Interiors | Brooks + Falotico

BEAUTIFUL STONE + SHINGLE HOUSE WITH GAMBREL ROOF IN SCENIC NEW CANAAN, CONNECTICUT. DESIGNED BY AWARD-WINNING ARCHITECT LOUISE BROOKS OF BROOKS & FALOTICO. INTERIOR DESIGN BY BOXWOOD HOME & INTERIORS.BEAUTIFUL STONE + SHINGLE HOUSE WITH GAMBREL ROOF | PHOTO: BRUCE BUCK, NEWHOMEMAG.COM

The Winter 2011 issue of New England Home's CONNECTICUT featured this cozy shingle and stone home, which I immediately recognized. I knew exactly where I'd seen it -- the beautiful portfolio of Fairfield County architects, Brooks & Falotico.

Louise Brooks, founder and principal of the firm, whose work has appeared in numerous publications, including Martha Stewart Living, Traditional Home, Renovation Style and House Beautiful, designed this charming residence, located in scenic New Canaan. It features "a gambrel roof, bay windows, a screened porch and a fieldstone terrace overlooking a cultivated landscape of just under an acre."

The home's new owner called in Petra and Whitney Roberts, a mother/daughter team, from Boxwood Home & Interiors, "to reconstruct the look and feel of the interiors that they had created for the original owners."

Notice how beautifully the subtle color scheme and the modern (yet classic) lines of the decor complement the home's fabulous interior architecture.

The great room of this beautiful new home in Connecticut, the informal layout leaves plenty of room for a comfortable seating area of plump brown couches, cream-colored linen chairs, wainscoting and a beautiful fireplaceLIVING AREA OF GREAT ROOM, BY BOXWOOD HOME + INTERIORS | Photo: Bruce Buck | NEHOMEMAG.COM

The house is classically detailed, yet designed to accommodate today's needs and lifestyle. For example, a spacious great room replaces formal living and dining rooms. "The open, informal layout leaves plenty of room for a comfortable seating area of plump brown couches and cream-colored linen chairs, as well as a large X-base dining table that seats eight."

The floor plan of the house, which Petra Roberts describes as “casual but still elegant, sophisticated but livable,” makes entertaining effortless.

The white cabinetry in the kitchen was custom-designed by Louise Brooks. The center island is painted a subtle gray, which perfectly accents its white marble top. A bay window above the apron-front sink fills the room with an abundance of natural light.

Notice the soapstone countertops, white subway-tiled backsplash and the fabulous hanging lanterns above the island.

The classically-detailed master bath features a luxurious pedestal tub (above), mosaic tile in a basketweave pattern, and calming sea-blue accents, including a dramatic lighting fixture with a bit of an Asian flair.
